Since 1844
Making an impact in our communities
Oak Hill Cemetery was established shortly after the Battle Creek community was founded in 1844, and has been in continuous operation for 178 years. In the beginning, 10 acres of land were purchased at $12/acre, which ran between South Avenue & Willow Street. This parcel of land was used to establish Oak Hill Cemetery.
The cemetery’s first burial was on May 12, 1844, after the death of Esther Anna Cox, wife of Dr. Edward Cox. Additionally, most of Battle Creek’s pioneers are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, attracting many visits each year.
After Oak Hill Cemetery was created, most of the original interments from the village’s Washington Avenue cemetery were moved from their former locations & re-interred at Oak Hill.
